John’s eagle is a present from the past

We were asked at an open day why lecterns are eagles. We didn’t know - but now we do. Because it soars upward, the eagle is often used as symbol of Jesus’ Resurrection and Ascension.

The eagle is also the symbol used to depict St John. whose writing about Jesus is said to ‘soar’ with inspiration – just like an eagle in flight. The Coleshill brass eagle is one of the items the Pinny family left for us over 100 years ago.

The inscription at the foot shows it is memory of Harriet Margaretta Pinney, (above) wife of the then vicar the Rev John (above).

Far right is Maxstoke’s carved wood eagle.
