RAF memorial hidden in plain sight

Thousands of people at Remembrance Services in church down the years have glanced at this reredos (above) in the lady chapel and never given it another thought.

It’s a memorial to RAF Corporal William Lucas (centre), who died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in 1944. William was the son of a local farming family and was serving with 81 Repair and Salvage unit when he was captured.

A carved plaque was hidden by an altar side table, preventing its identification. His story is here.
