Gospel and gossip

18th century vicar the Rev John Blythe (above left) does not appear on any listing of our incumbents or curates, but he had an unknowing effect on the history of South Africa.

Rev Blyth was a master at the Coleshill Free Grammar School as well as filling several church posts locally.

He taught Samuel Hudson, the Gilson-born son of a church sexton. Samuel emigrated to the Cape and eventually became the Samuel Pepys of South Africa. The link, one of many online, gives an idea of how he acquired the accolade.

The sketch of Samuel by Lady Anne Barnard was believed to have been made on the voyage to Capetown.

A well documented family history is available to read in church. Ask to see The Other Hudson if interested.
