Change and decay in all around I see…

From near dereliction in the early 1700s to the massive reordering 160 years ago, and and the more recent reordering and conservation work, the building has changed hugely over the centuries.

In 1928, there was space for 900 people according to the parish financial report above. The space is the same today, but different, as is this picture painted in 1820. The celestory windows on the north side have gone, and the clock had yet to be made and installed.

The image on the right shows the inside of the church about 1890. Note the chest (since repositioned) and the pews either side of the aisle at the west end (nearest camera). Those were removed in the reordering of the 1980s. A central heating system had yet to be installed.

The magazine is still in existence nearly 100 years later, although now an A4 publication designed on a computer for printing. Most are now sent as .pdf files via email.
