The music goes round and round…
…and it comes out below. Clock engineer Stuart Morrison shows clockmaker William Leeson’s descendant Chris Leeson the refurbished timepiece. All the bits that need to move to sound the hour are moving as it strikes 11. Few people have seen the clock actually striking the hour (below): it’s too loud to stay in the belfry.
Wires and levers connect the clock to the ninth bell. The nearest hammer is connected to the rope on the stairs by the west door and sometimes used at funerals. Listen out for the long hum from the bell as the hammer rests.
Seen in between the two red-painted diagonal parts of the bell frame is the ball of the clapper, which makes the noise when the bell is rung.
